Deepening Into Jewish Sabbath Mysticism with Professor Kenneth Hanson: The Secret Power of Speech

This time it is 2:30 AM on the 2nd Shabbat in Iyar 5786, in the first watch my new monastic horarium, from 12-3 AM, which I have called for months now my "Watch of the Primordial Word." It's mostly my time for sleeping but occasionally I use it for study of the Prologue of John. Tonight, I felt called to listen to your latest work instead. It was a perfect fit, especially on the heels of our recent Torah readings about tzara'at in Leviticus, which the sages say was principally caused by evil speech. 

The mystical rising in the last sentence of your presentation transitions expertly into the rising pitch of the musical climax in your closing credits. This artful touch of genius transforms your credits into a hidden ladder of ascent for those in the know. It also leads to reflection on the relationship between speech and music. Your own speech pattern in these videos is wonderfully musical, Professor. I admire your sound.

I don't read or speak Hebrew, only the English mother tongue of my Maxson forefathers. But sincerity, as you suggest, is a universal virtue. I mean of course that the idea we have in mind when we hear the word "sincerity" is the universal part; the word "sincerity" itself is particular to English, as is its translation into Hebrew. This leads us to ask whether any particular language - say Arabic, English or Hebrew - can truly be the primordial language of Hashem. I am very open to the idea that Hebrew indeed is, but I am also inclined to defend the opposite point of view, that Hebrew is "merely" Hashem's particular language for communication with and by the Jewish people, and that English is the angels' language for the opening stage of this current United Nations dispensation.

What will be the world federal language in the Messianic Era? Will it really be Hebrew, or will Hebrew be the mother tongue of the Jews only, and will something radically new be developed for world federation as a whole by our most gifted AI-supported UN translators, linguistic engineers and digital mystics?
